Not a single team but a formal Air Combat Command program: a modern front-line fighter — an F-16, F-22, F-35, or A-10 — flying formation with a civilian-owned WWII, Korea, or Vietnam-era warbird such as a P-51 Mustang, P-38 Lightning, or F-86 Sabre. The pairing is meant to put the entire span of Air Force fighter history in the sky at once.
What began as an informal one-off crowd-pleaser was formalized into the Heritage Flight Program, and the nonprofit Air Force Heritage Flight Foundation was created in 2010 to keep it funded and flying. Civilian warbird pilots go through a dedicated certification course each year before they’re cleared to fly formation with active-duty fighters.
